In a news release, Pioneer Community Hospital CEO Mark Norman said the hospital’s emergency department will close as of Dec. 1, and the hospital will not accept any new patients after that date.
Pioneer Community Hospital officials attributed the closure to the hospital losing its critical access designation.
“Due to CMS’ re-interpretation of their critical access hospital distance requirement regulation, we are regrettably announcing the closure of Pioneer Community Hospital of Newton,” a news release from the hospital states. “The loss of the CAH designation makes the operation of the hospital no longer financially feasible.”
Pioneer Community Hospital is just one of many hospitals in Mississippi facing financial challenges. A recently released study revealed 31 hospitals in the state are so financially vulnerable they are at risk of closure.
