Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Georgetown University Hospital received a $10 million gift from the Robert & Lynda Carter Altman Family Foundation to establish a surgical education center.
The gift, made in honor of Lynda Carter’s late husband, Robert A. Altman, will fund the Robert A. Altman Center for Surgical Education at the hospital, according to a March 23 news release from Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health. Ms. Carter is an actress and singer known for her role as Wonder Woman.
Patrick Jackson, MD, chief of MedStar Georgetown’s division of general surgery, will lead the center and serve as the inaugural holder of the Robert A. Altman Endowed Chair of Surgery, the first endowed chair designated by MedStar Health.
The center is designed to expand training for medical students, residents, fellows and attending physicians and to build surgical capacity across the region.
MedStar Health said the program will integrate technical and nontechnical skills training, educational research and transdisciplinary collaboration. It will also include a simulation-based facility and hands-on training in operating rooms.
MedStar Health is a 10-hospital system with more than 300 care locations across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
