Medicare Buy-In Could Be Grand Bargain for Entitlements

The bipartisan method to link Republicans, who want to raise the Medicare eligibility age to 67, and Democrats, who are reticent to give ground on entitlements, could be allowing 65- and 66-year-olds to buy into Medicare, according to a report by Politico citing a recent paper by the Urban Institute.

Those near eligibility for Medicare could choose government health coverage through Medicare over the private market, but they would need to pay an estimated $10,000 annually, much cheaper than most private health plans. The idea has piqued the interest of Democratic and Republican Congressional staff, according to Politico.
