Medicaid and CHIP enrollment hits 69M in November 2014

Nearly 69 million individuals across the country were enrolled in the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Medicaid in November 2014, according to a monthly report from CMS.

The report on Medicaid and CHIP data represented the agencies’ eligibility activity for November 2014. Open enrollment in the marketplace began Nov. 15, 2014. As of November 2014, 26 states and Washington D.C. had implemented Medicaid expansion under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Here are some Medicaid and CHIP enrollment, application and eligibility data highlights from November 2014:

1. 444,324 additional people were enrolled in November 2014 compared to the previous month in all states — plus Washington, D.C. — that reported comparable October and November data.

2. Among the places that reported November 2014 enrollment data, as well as data from July through September 2013, more than 10.1 million additional individuals were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP as of November 2014. That’s more than a 17.5 percent increase over the average monthly enrollment for July through September 2013. Connecticut and Maine were not included.

3. In the states that implemented Medicaid expansion and were covering newly eligible adults in November 2014, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment went up by nearly 25.5 percent compared to the July-September 2013 baseline period.

4. Total Medicaid and CHIP child enrollment in the 45 states reporting in November 2014 was 28.9 million.

5. State Medicaid and CHIP agencies initially received nearly 2 million total applications for financial assistance.

6. State based marketplaces initially received 1.1 million total applications for financial assistance.

7. More than 2 million total individuals were determined eligible for Medicaid and CHIP by state agencies.
