Mayo-Franciscan to temporarily close inpatient mental care clinic

Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Health Care in La Crosse, Wis., will temporarily close its inpatient behavioral health unit in mid-June due to a lack of in-house psychiatry services, reports Lacrosse Tribune.

The hospital is currently looking for other inpatient programs to which it can divert patients, including La Crosse-based Gundersen Health System or the La Crosse County Human Services Department’s Integrated Support and Recovery Services.

Mayo-Franciscan did not say when the inpatient unit will reopen.

A lack of available treatment options for those suffering behavioral health issues has taken the national spotlight this year. In 2014, Wisconsin behavioral health providers were able to service only 21 percent of residents in need of care, according to the most recent statistics from Kaiser Family Foundation.

“We remain committed to serving the needs of behavioral health patients in our community,” said Susan Halter, MD, medical director of Mayo-Franciscan’s behavioral health services. “This is a challenging time for behavioral health services, not only here at Franciscan Healthcare but across the country. We are working on a long-term plan for this unit.”
