Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System has reached a definitive agreement to sell its hospice operations in Northwest and Southwest Wisconsin to St. Croix Hospice.
The deal, pending regulatory approval, is expected to close later this quarter. It builds on a long-standing partnership between the two Midwest-based providers and follows Mayo’s earlier divestiture of its Mankato, Minn., hospice program to St. Croix Hospice.
“Over the past several years, we’ve built a strong collaborative relationship with St. Croix Hospice, grounded in a shared commitment to compassionate, high-quality end-of-life care,” Richard Helmers, MD, vice president of Mayo Clinic Health System in Wisconsin, said in an Aug. 1 news release. “The recent transition of the MCHS Mankato hospice program to St. Croix Hospice was thoughtful and patient-centric, giving us confidence in this next step.”
St. Croix Hospice operates more than 85 locations across the Midwest and will continue to work with Mayo to ensure continuity of care during the transition.
The transaction marks St. Croix Hospice’s second acquisition of a health system-based hospice program in recent months, following its fourth-quarter purchase of hospice services in Iowa and Nebraska.
“We are seeing hospital-based post-acute divestitures as an emerging trend,” St. Croix Hospice CEO Heath Bartness said. “We appreciate our long-standing referral relationship with MCHS and are pleased that St. Croix Hospice was selected to continue their tradition of clinical excellence in hospice care.”
