Certain government reimbursements don’t cover the full cost of providing care to Medicare, low-income and uninsured patients. In particular, Mass General Brigham’s shortfall this year was up 15 percent compared to 2021, increasing by around $307 million.

For next year, Mass General Brigham has multiple strategic initiatives planned to address health disparities in communities. The health system received $50 million from Robert K. Kraft and The Kraft Family Foundation to address health disparities. The health system also invested $50 million in a new community and mental health strategy to improve mental healthcare capacity, workforce development, chronic disease management and nutrition security and equity.
