Charity care accounted for about 35 percent of that amount, health professions education made up approximately 27 percent and mission-driven health services constituted roughly 23 percent. The state’s hospitals spent an average of 10 percent of their total operating expenses on community benefits, up from 9.2 percent in 2011.
Additionally, in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, all acute-care hospitals in the state have completed their first community health needs assessment.
