Portland-based MaineHealth plans to relocate its headquarters to Westbrook, Maine, in a move expected to save the system about $1.5 million annually in overhead, according to an April 9 news release shared with Becker’s.
The health system will shift its headquarters to Riverfront Plaza, a 134,000-square-foot building it owns in Westbrook, a suburb of Portland. The site already houses portions of MaineHealth’s IT operations, as well as behavioral health clinicians and administrative staff.
The relocation follows an earlier move to sell its headquarters space to the Portland Museum of Art. The deal includes a two-year lease-back that gives the system time to transition roughly 300 employees to the new location.
MaineHealth leaders said the decision reflects both changing workplace patterns and broader cost-containment efforts. Increased remote work has left portions of the current headquarters underused. Moreover, the move also aims to limit future spending on administrative space while supporting affordability initiatives, according to the release.
The transition is expected to be completed in early 2027.
MaineHealth, based in Portland, employs about 23,000 people and includes a Level 1 trauma center, eight additional hospitals and a network of outpatient, behavioral health, home health, hospice and senior care services.
