Maine hospital to end maternity services

Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent will close its obstetrics unit May 26, WAGM News reported.

The moves comes as birth rates decline in the area along with staffing trouble, the May 9 report said. NMMC is in talks with Cary Medical Center in Caribou, Maine to establish outpatient clinics for prenatal and post-partum care.

Employees affected by the closure will be offered positions within NMMC, the report said. 

Between 2006 and 2020, more than 400 rural maternity units closed in the U.S.
