Maine health system plans layoffs ahead of acquisition

Lewiston-based Central Maine Healthcare plans to lay off up to 100 workers amid ongoing financial challenges, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported July 31.

The planned cuts — which would equate to about 3% of the health system’s workforce — come as Central Maine Healthcare prepares to be acquired by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

The deal would see Prime enter a second new state this year, following its acquisition of eight Illinois hospitals from St. Louis-based Ascension in March.

Central Maine Healthcare includes three hospitals — Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Bridgton Hospital in Bridgton and Rumford Hospital in Rumford — a cancer center and network of physician practices.

The health system did not respond to Becker’s request for comment.
