Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary, La., will close its inpatient labor and delivery unit Oct. 11, according to an Oct. 7 hospital news release shared with Becker’s.
The closure comes two months after the hospital eliminated 14 positions and ended its allergy, asthma and immunology services as part of efforts to strengthen its finances.
Lane Regional cited delivery volumes as the reason for the closure. “The volume of deliveries made it increasingly difficult for Lane to sustain the service independently,” CEO Frank Corcoran said in the release.
Three Lane Regional physicians, Joshua Best, Samantha Bland and Nikki Gautreaux, will join the medical staff at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, La., and begin delivering babies there Oct. 12. The two organizations are also in discussions for Woman’s to take over ownership and operation of Lane Regional’s outpatient OB-GYN clinic, which would keep the clinic open on Lane’s campus.
Lane Regional is also continuing discussions with other healthcare organizations about potential affiliations involving other parts of the hospital’s operations, the release said.
Lane Regional is a 131-bed hospital with more than 850 employees, according to its website.
