Burlington, Kan.-based Coffey County Hospital has shared plans to end its obstetrics services, effective June 30.
As of March 31, the 25-bed critical access hospital plans to deliver all third-trimester pregnancies prior to the services ending, according to a statement on the hospital’s website.
“This is one of the most challenging decisions a small, rural hospital can face,” the statement said. “It is based upon declining numbers and is not a reflection of our obstetrics nurses or providers; on the contrary, they provide exceptional services and care and immensely care about our expectant moms and newborns.”
The hospital plans to keep all full- and part-time nurses affected by the service closures and transfer them to other departments.
