Rock Regional Hospital in Derby, Kan., has filed a petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to maintain patient care and hospital operations.
The filing will allow Rock Regional to pursue a financial restructuring while serving the community without interruption, according to a Dec. 8 hospital news release shared with Becker’s.
The hospital is fully operational and emergency, inpatient and outpatient services are proceeding as scheduled. No changes to services, appointments or staffing are expected, according to the release.
“Our focus is, and always will be, on our patients and on preserving access to healthcare for the Derby community,” CEO Ben Quinton said in the release. “This reorganization allows us to stabilize our financial operations while continuing to deliver uninterrupted, high-quality care. We are confident this process provides the best path forward for our patients, staff, physicians, and the Derby community we serve.”
Rock Regional opened in April 2019 and was not eligible for some early federal pandemic relief programs available to established hospitals. Since then, the hospital has faced ongoing operational and financial pressures.
Through the Chapter 11 process, the hospital said it intends to work with the court, creditors and community partners to either pursue a restructuring or transition plan to preserve patient access. The filing was made Dec. 7 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas.
Rock Regional’s filing was the second of its kind this week. Oroville (Calif.) Hospital and its parent organization, OroHealth, each filed petitions for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Dec. 8 to facilitate a transaction aimed at securing the hospital’s long-term future.
The court-supervised process will allow the hospital to continue operations while seeking a partner with the financial and operational resources to invest in the organization and support its mission, according to a Dec. 8 hospital news release.
