The U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court Eastern District of Michigan initially approved the sale motion on March 23. However, according to CMH officials, the sale has halted due to issues with recertification and licensure under Medicare, and CMS’ unwillingness to grant a waiver for McLaren Health Care to operate CMH’s emergency services and outpatient surgery areas. CMH needs surveys for recertification and licensure, which can take 45 to 180 days, according to the Cheboygan News.
CMH was only budgeted to remain open until April 3 when the sale to McLaren Health was expected to finalize.
This closure announcement includes not only the hospital in Cheboygan, but also the Cheboygan Memorial Health Center, Women’s & Children’s Health Services, and the Indian River Medical Center. Cheboygan Memorial Hospital is the area’s largest employer and leaves 300 unemployed.
