The program has saved more than $86 million in three years, well above the $18.5 million savings target, according to a news release.
Under the initiative, the state awarded a three-year, $14 million program integrity contract to Optum, a healthcare technology company. The savings under the program result from recovering funds from providers who inappropriately billed Medicaid and by cost avoidance — catching claims errors or fraudulent activities in advance, according to the state Medicaid agency, Iowa Medicaid Enterprise.
The program integrity work will continue in fiscal year 2014 in the first of two optional performance-based years under the contract, according to the release.
