Iowa Medicaid Director is ‘very confident’ state will be ready for privatization

Although federal officials pushed the Iowa Medicaid system’s transition to managed care from Jan. 1 to March 1, Iowa Medicaid Director Mikki Stier said she’s now “very confident” the system will be prepared for the upcoming switch, according to The Associated Press.

“It’s a broad network of providers that have signed up, our communication plans are strong and we are modifying those daily,” Ms. Stier said, according to the report.

Ms. Stier said her confidence also stems from shorter call center wait times and the implementation of training for state health providers.

According to Ms. Stier, 45 percent of Medicaid providers have signed up with the state’s three private insurers. However, some lawmakers believe that’s not enough.

“In order to have the choice that most consumers are going to want, we really do want all the providers to sign up with each of the companies,” said Iowa Sen. Joe Bolkcom (D).
