Internal growth, not M&A, is Lifespan's priority: CFO

Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan Health System tried a tie-up with fellow Rhode Island provider Care New England last year but bowed to federal antitrust concerns to accept the inevitable.

Now, Lifespan is aiming more for internal growth with a focus on ambulatory care and increasing patient volume. It is also targeting supply chain savings totaling $17 million in the next two years, CFO Peter Markell said in a June 20 Providence Business Journal report.

"I'm not a big believer in looking back," Mr. Markell said during a recent conference call. "I think you learn from history, but you move forward."

Just three months ago, Lifespan said it would not rule out another go at merging with Care New England.

Lifespan recorded an operating loss of $7.2 million in the six months to March 31, according to the report. That compared to a $65.2 million loss in the same period last year.
