Intermountain posts 3.2% operating margin through Q3

Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health recorded an operating income of $442 million (3.2% operating margin) through the third quarter of 2025, up from an operating income of $399 million (3.1% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Nov. 25 financial report. 

Four things to know:

1. The health system reported total operating revenue of $13.8 billion for the nine months ended Sept. 30, up from $12.8 billion during the same period in 2024. Patient service revenue was $8.2 billion, up from $7.6 billion. Premiums and capitation were $4.8 billion, up from $4.4 billion. 

2. Total operating expenses were $12.7 billion through the third quarter, up from $11.9 billion during the same period last year. Employee compensation and benefits totaled $5.7 billion, up from $5.4 billion last year. Supply expenses were $2.4 billion, up from $2.3 billion. Medical claims were $2.4 billion, up from $2.2 billion. 

3. As of Sept. 30, Intermountain had 58,628 full-time equivalent employees, including both physicians and staff. On the same date in 2024, Intermountain had 57,492 full-time equivalent employees. 

4. The system recorded a net income of $2.1 billion through the third quarter, up from $1.9 billion last year.
