Insurers ask for another 90 days to comment on price transparency rule

Health insurers are requesting the Trump administration to extend the comment period for its proposed price transparency rule an additional 90 days, according to Politico‘s Pulse newsletter.

On Nov. 15, CMS issued a final rule requiring hospitals to publish payer-negotiated rates beginning in 2021. The Trump administration also released a proposed rule that would require health plans to share price and cost-sharing information with members up front.

Insurers have largely criticized the proposal. In a letter obtained by Politico reporter Susannah Luthi, two industry heavyweights — America’s Health Insurance Plans and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association — asked federal officials to delay a Jan. 14 comment deadline to April 14.

In their letter, the groups said upcoming regulations and legislation may affect how they respond. Additionally, they said “the sheer volume of data that the government is proposing health plans disclose is staggering.”
