Indiana Bill Echoes Arkansas’ Private Medicaid Expansion Plan

Converted by Arkansas’ victory in gaining HHS approval to expand Medicaid via the private sector, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has changed his tune on meeting federal criteria to cover the poor, working to curry favor instead of stoking conservative ire among a Republican-controlled legislature for his plan to add 400,000 residents to its Healthy Indiana managed care plan with federal money, according to a report by the Indianapolis Star.

HHS said it would allow Arkansas to add its newly eligible Medicaid members to a premium support system that includes copays to help poor residents afford private health insurance. If Indiana’s similar plan is approved, it would funnel $10.5 billion in new federal money through 2020, according to the report.

The bill has already passed the state senate and will go before the House if a public health committee votes to approve it today.
