Illinois budgetary woes: State’s hospitals owed millions

Illinois is amongst the states with the highest amount of debt, and its hospitals are feeling the pinch of their state being in the red.  Illinois’s latest budget stalemate has left the state $7.4 billion behind in bills, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.

Hospitals and physicians are amongst the many organizations owed money by the state. These providers care for state workers, but they could wait up to a year and a half to receive payment, according to the report.

For example, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, Ill., is owed $15 million from the state, according to the report.
