Cigna’s Net Income Falls 35% in 3Q

After recording net income of $307 million in the third quarter of 2010, Cigna’s 2011 third quarter resulted in a 35 percent drop to $200 million, according to a Cigna news release (pdf).

The health insurer’s 2011 total revenues in the third quarter were up 6.6 percent from the same period in 2010. Third quarter revenues totaled $5.61 billion in 2011 and $5.27 billion in 2010.

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2011, Cigna’s net income was $1.04 billion, up 17.3 percent from the $884 million in net income recorded in the first nine months of 2010. Cigna’s total revenues for the first nine months of 2011 surpassed $16.5 billion, up 4.5 percent from the $15.8 billion in net income posted in the first nine months of 2010.
