Jersey City, N.J.-based Hudson Regional Health has shared plans to withdraw its certificate-of-need application to close Heights University Hospital, also in Jersey City, signaling a potential path forward to restore healthcare services in the community it serves.
“Hudson Regional Health has always intended to provide critical healthcare access in a manner that is financially sustainable in the Heights,” the system said in an April 14 statement shared with Becker’s. “In recent days, HRH has been encouraged by renewed efforts with its landlord to evaluate the restoration of healthcare services in the region.”
Hudson County Superior Court Judge Anthony D’Elia granted a temporary restraining order April 15 to prevent a public hearing that was scheduled at Heights University Hospital to discuss its closure. Hudson Regional leadership will continue working with elected officials to determine the best approach to delivering care to area residents, the statement said.
The system closed Heights University Hospital, formerly known as Christ Hospital, in mid-November, leaving its emergency department in operation. On March 14, the ED was closed as 2025 losses totalled more than $74 million.
Hudson Regional Health was created in May 2025 after CarePoint Health exited bankruptcy, The system introduced a stabilization plan for Heights University Hospital in late October, which phased out nonessential services and shifted certain staff to other locations.
