How much do employer-sponsored health benefits cost? 10 things to know

Family premiums for employer-sponsored insurance plans rose 3 percent in 2014, one of the lowest increases in the past 15 years, which is largely due to slower growth in healthcare costs, according to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation survey.

Here are 10 things to know about the cost of employer-sponsored health benefits, according to the report.

1. With the slight premium increase in 2014, the cost of the average family insurance plan rose to $16,824 annually, or $1,403 per month. 

2. The average annual family premium in 2014 is 26 percent higher than the average family premium in 2009 and 69 percent higher than the average premium in 2004.

3. The average premium for single coverage in 2014 is $6,025 per year, or $502 per month.

4. The average annual premium for family coverage for workers employed at businesses with three to 199 workers is $15,849 for 2014, which is $1,416 lower than the average annual premium for covered workers in businesses with 200 or more workers.

5. The average annual premium for single coverage for workers employed at businesses with three to 199 workers is $5,788, which is $342 lower than the average annual premium for covered workers in businesses with 200 or more workers.

6. The average premiums for covered workers vary by geographical location, with covered workers in the northeast paying $948 more for family coverage than the national average. Additionally, covered workers in the south pay $654 less for family coverage than the national average.

7. At businesses where 35 percent or more of the workers are age 26 or younger the average single coverage premiums are $787 lower than at businesses where a lower percentage of the workforce is 26 or younger.

8. The average premium for family coverage is $1,773 less at businesses where 35 percent or more of the workers are age 26 or younger than at those with an older workforce.

9. Covered workers at businesses where at least 35 percent of workers earn $23,000 per year or less pay an average of $1,069 less for single coverage per year than those at businesses where at least 35 percent of the workers earn $57,000 per year.

10. The average annual premium for family coverage is $3,405 less at businesses where at least 35 percent of the workers earn $23,000 per year or less than at those where at least 35 percent of the workers earn $57,000 per year.
