Case Study: How Advocate Health Care in Illinois Improved its Chargemaster

Maintaining the chargemaster of a large hospital system could present workflow and efficiency problems, but Advocate Health Care, based in Oak Brook, Ill., found a way to improve its chargemaster setup, according to a case study from Craneware (pdf).

Advocate has eight hospitals, all of which were on a manual chargemaster. Wendi Accardi, director of CDM and revenue compliance for Advocate, had to go to each hospital and review the chargemaster line-by-line.

Ms. Accardi and Advocate made the switch to an automated management solution for their chargemaster, which has since created a smoother workflow. Two chargemaster analysts, one corporate analyst, a coding specialist and an operating room chargemaster analyst help maintain the system, ensure the codes are accurate and quickly perform chargemaster reviews across all hospitals to confirm codes are used appropriately.
