Hospital executives recently ranked WellPoint as the worst health insurer in the country in overall favorability, according to a survey from healthcare public relations firm ReviveHealth (pdf).

The survey interviewed more than 400 hospital CEOs, CFOs and payor relations executives. WellPoint supplanted UnitedHealth Group as the worst-ranked payor. United was rated at the bottom in the two previous years of the survey.

United still managed to rank as the worst insurer in four other categories: paying hospital claims promptly, timeliness, honesty and fewest claims denials.

Cigna, Aetna and independent Blue Cross Blue Shield plans were rated as the three highest-rated private payors in overall favorability. However, 27 percent of respondents said independent BCBS plans were the worst in hospital payment rates, the highest of any payor.

The survey did not include responses from WellPoint and the other insurers.
