Hospital district to flex power over troubled Florida Keys hospital

The Lower Florida Keys Hospital District, which leases land to LowerKeysMedicalCenter in Stock Island, Fla., has hired lawyers to determine the district’s authority over hospital leadership and pricing practices, reports Fly Keys News.

The board voted 6-1 to spend an estimated $10,000 to $20,000 to have outside counsel render a legal opinion on whether the board can hire and fire physicians and set prices for medical services.

LKMC is a for-profit facility owned by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.

LKMC has come under fire from patients and city leaders who have demanded the city attorney launch an investigation into the hospital. Patients have accused LKMC of providing poor quality services and engaging in fraudulent billing practices.
