Highmark, Allegheny Health lay off 118

Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health laid off 118 employees on June 21, including two from  Allegheny Health Network, a spokesperson for the health system told Becker's.

The layoffs follow the health system's cutbacks in March and April, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. Highmark laid off 141 workers earlier this year, sparked by changes in the post-pandemic environment.

"Change is not only constant but necessary for Highmark Health to remain an innovative company that is competitively positioned for future growth in a marketplace that is rapidly evolving," Highmark said in a statement shared with Becker's. "We are actively transforming to meet the changing needs of members and our communities through our living health model while maintaining financial strength and stability."

Highmark posted $6.7 billion in revenue for the first quarter and $227 million in net income. Allegheny Health, part of Highmark, posted an operating loss of $36.2 million in the first quarter, improving on the $105.5 million loss for the same period last year.

Highmark said it will "continue to invest strategically in growth, new markets and reinventing health to fulfill our mission of delivering a remarkable health experience."
