HHS Completes More Than 1,200 Health Plan Waivers

The Department of Health and Human Services has granted waivers from part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to 1,231 health insurers, the last time HHS will update its PPACA waiver total, according to a report from The Hill.

The waivers are for the PPACA’s restrictions on annual benefit caps for employer-sponsored plans, according to the report. Under the PPACA, health plans must gradually raise their essential benefit limits until 2014, when annual limits will become illegal. Companies that received waivers are able to keep their benefit caps until 2014.

Overall, the waivers for health insurers cover less than 4 million people, or roughly 3 percent of the population, according to the report.
