UnitedHealth’s total revenue jumped 7.3 percent, from $25.4 billion in the first quarter of 2011 to $27.3 billion in the first quarter of 2012, which ended March 31. UnitedHealthcare’s revenue in the first quarter was $25.5 billion, an overwhelming majority of UnitedHealth’s business.

The health insurer giant raised its 2012 outlook after experiencing a boost in enrollment and lower-than-expected medical claims. UnitedHealthcare also won a five-year TRICARE award, beginning in the middle of 2013, to provide healthcare coverage to the roughly 3 million active duty or retired military members in the Western United States.
