The billing errors were first discovered by a third-party billing vendor in September. Most of the affected patients were treated at Hilo (Hawaii) Medical Center, but patients of Pahala, Hawaii-based Ka’u Hospital and the Hale Ho’ola Hamakua facility in Honokaa, Hawaii, also received incorrect statements.
Hilo Medical Center spokesperson Elena Cabatu told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald the health system has sent corrected statement to all patients affected by the errors.
The publication states some of the incorrect statements resulted from a failure to take out insurance payments that had been made.
