The report analyzes financial and membership data during third quarter 2011 through third quarter 2012 from Aetna, Cigna, Health Care Service Corporation, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, UnitedHealth Group and WellPoint, who insure about 51 percent of the U.S. population.

Aggregated membership from all seven companies grew 2.6 percent year-over-year, but Medicare and Medicaid enrollment grew much more quickly, jumping 17.2 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively, between September 2011 and September 2012.
