Georgia’s Grady Health System Request for $30 Million From Other Area Hospitals Rejected

A request by Grady Health System in Atlanta, Ga., for a combined contribution of $30 million from several hospitals in its metro area to help care for its poorer patients has been rejected, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Grady is suffering under the financial burden of indigent and trauma care, with the challenge compounded by the current economic climate.

Last December, Grady made a similar request for $50 million over about five years to six nearby hospitals. Emory Healthcare responded and eliminated $20 million of Grady’s $62 million debt, according to the report.

But hospital officials say they are having their own tough times now and that Grady should restructure its system. They have offered to support legislation that would add funding and encourage financial and medical management expertise, but cannot donate more capital.

Grady officials, according to the report, are considering asking the state legislature to impose a tax which would go toward supporting indigent care on metro hospitals.
