For-Profit Hospital 2Q Earnings: 4 Recent Reports

In the past week, four of the largest for-profit hospital operators in the United States released their earnings for the second quarter ended June 30, 2012. Here are the four companies that have reported second quarter financials thus far, with profit figures included.

1. For the second quarter ended June 30, 2012, Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals reported almost identical net income figures, as both quarters hovered around $40.3 million.

2. King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services reported a positive second quarter, as net income rose 3.8 percent year-over-year from $103.6 million in 2011 to $107.6 million this year.

3. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems‘ profit in the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 surged 136 percent — from $35.4 million last year to $83.4 million this year — but an impairment loss heavily influenced last year’s net income.

4. Net income at Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates dropped 24 percent, from $48.61 million in the second quarter of 2011 to $36.95 million in the most recent quarter, marking the second straight loss of its 2012 fiscal year.
