Greenville, S.C.-based Prisma Health’s credit rating was upgraded to “A” from “A-” by Fitch.

The upgrade is supported by Prisma’s two-year operating performance improvement and its sound balance sheet, Fitch said in a June 27 report. The system is the largest provider of services to Medicaid-eligible patients in South Carolina and has benefited from the July 2024 implementation of the state’s Medicaid directed payments program.

Prisma’s upgrade is also supported by its leadership’s focus on improving system integration and lowering its cost structure “while continuing to pursue its strategy to become a multi-region and risk-capable clinically integrated health company,” Fitch said. Prisma expanded outside of South Carolina in December with the acquisition of Maryville, Tenn.-based Blount Memorial Hospital.

The system has a positive outlook at its new rating.
