Partners HealthCare Agrees to Take on Risk in Contract With Harvard Pilgrim

Boston-based Partners HealthCare System has agreed to a new four-year contract with insurer Harvard Pilgrim Health Care that will put Partners on the hook for any fee-for-service payments that extend beyond an agreed-upon global payment budget, according to a Boston Globe report.

The contract will still pay for care on a fee-for-service basis but puts Partners at risk if the total paid to the health system in a given year exceeds the global payment budget. Under the contract, fee-for-service payments will increase between 5 and 6 percent this year, but future increases will be limited to 2 to 3 percent each year, according to the report.
