HIMSS: Robust Education Effort Needed for 5010, ICD-10 Compliance

In a letter to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, HIMSS said it is imperative that a widespread educational effort be implemented in order for all healthcare stakeholders to deal with the upcoming HIPAA Version 5010 and ICD-10 compliance dates.

Because 5010 implementation is foundational to ICD-10 transformation, HIMSS suggested several things are needed, such as the following:

•    Project plans and project teams.
•    Communication with vendors.
•    Education of all staff who are impacted by the coding and transaction changes.
•    Identification of financial resources for hiring additional staff necessary to accomplish the projects.
•    Money to pay for the software updates and implementation.
