Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute posted an operating loss of $9.1 million (-0.9% margin) in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, compared with an operating loss of $2.6 million (-0.3% margin) in the same quarter last year, according to its Sept. 1 financial report.

Six things to know:

1. Total operating revenue was $1.1 billion in the three months ended June 30, up from $968.3 million during the same period last year. Net patient service revenue was $860.7 million, up from $764 million, which Dana-Farber attributed to growth in patient volume and pharmacy revenue.

2. Total operating expenses, excluding non-recurring items, were $1.1 billion in the quarter, up from $965.2 million during the same period last year. Patient service expenses totaled $727 million, up from $637.1 million. This increase was driven primarily by direct patient care costs of $712.3 million, up from $624.8 million, amid higher patient volume, compensation and drug costs, the system said.

3. Non-recurring items, net, reduced quarterly operating results by $20.8 million, up from a $5.7 million reduction in the same quarter last year. Dana-Farber attributes the year-to-date total of these costs primarily to planning expenses tied to a proposed clinical collaboration with Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and construction of the Lavine Bekenstein Cancer Hospital at Dana-Farber, a 300-bed inpatient facility that broke ground in April 2026, as well as payouts under a voluntary early retirement plan announced in May 2025.

4. Net patient accounts receivable was $279.6 million as of June 30, down from $296.3 million at fiscal 2025 year-end (September 30), which Dana-Farber attributed to strong collection results across several large commercial payors and an increase in contractual allowances.

5. Dana-Farber recorded a net income of $153.1 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, up from $94.1 million during the same period last year, driven largely by investment gains of $150.9 million, up from $88.3 million.

6. Through the first nine months of fiscal 2026, Dana-Farber reported operating income of $52.1 million (1.7% margin), down from $58.9 million (2% margin) in the same period last year.
