County-Run Hospital in California Ponders Ways to Reduce $20M Deficit

Faced with a projected $20 million deficit this fiscal year, San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, Calif., may lay off up to 100 employees or even put itself up for sale, according to the Tracy Press.

The proposals come from a white paper on the 212-bed county-owned hospital released by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. Other proposals in the white paper include:

 

  • Gaining more Medi-Cal patients from private doctors, for as much as $3 million in additional income a year.
  • Renegotiating maintenance and supply contracts for as much $500,000 in savings a year.
  • Continuing cuts of nurses’ overtime, which began last December.
  • Changing how Medi-Cal patients are billed, for a savings of several hundred thousand dollars a year.
