Construction begins on $7M Mary Free Bed at Sparrow

Through a joint project between Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich., construction has begun on phase 1 of the $7 million renovation of Sparrow's inpatient rehabilitation unit, called Mary Free Bed at Sparrow.

Under the renovation and expansion project, Sparrow's inpatient rehabilitation unit will grow to 40 private patient rooms, and will include two therapy gymnasiums on the same floor, according to a news release.

Thirty of the 40 planned private patient rooms will be done as part of phase 1 of the project, which has an estimated completion date of mid-2015. The remainder of the project is projected to be completed by early 2016, according to the release.

"We have an exceptionally compassionate team," Kris Tennant, director of Mary Free Bed at Sparrow, said in the news release. "To be able to provide care in an environment conducive to restoring hope and freedom is what I’m most excited about."

Ms. Tennant added, "It is a wonderful collaborative project. Physicians, nurses, therapists, and Patients and their family members all provided input. We will be able to maximize functional independence for our patients in a wonderfully healing environment."
