Connecticut Valley Hospital at risk of losing Medicare contract

CMS is threatening to cut off Medicare and Medicaid funding to Middletown-based Connecticut Valley Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital, Oct. 27, unless it reaches compliance with federal standards.

CVH was placed on immediate jeopardy status following a Sept. 14 investigation by state regulators. The investigation found that CVH was not in compliance with the CMS’ basic health and safety requirements.  Details regarding the issues have not yet been released, according to Boston Regional Office Freedom of Information Officer Aaron Smith.

Earlier this year, 10 mental health workers at CVH’s Whiting Forensic Division were arrested in connection to a patient abuse scandal. The Connecticut Department of Public Health investigated the facility after a whistleblower called attention to video evidence of prolonged abuse of a 62-year-old patient. The tape allegedly shows staff members kicking, jabbing, taunting and throwing liquids at the patient.

It is unclear if the contract termination is connected to the abuse scandal.

Mr. Smith told Becker’s Hospital Review that details regarding the termination will be available after the hospital submits a corrective-action plan or will be released 30-days after the hospital received notice.
