Hartford-based Connecticut Children’s has filed a certificate of need to close an inpatient unit operating at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Conn.

The pediatric system linked the decision to staffing shortages, low volumes in the unit and financial challenges.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Connecticut Children’s said in a statement to Becker’s. “It reflects our responsibility to allocate resources in a way that sustains exceptional pediatric care for all children while ensuring operational stability across our system.”

From October 2023 to September 2025, the unit saw an average of one or two patients per day, the hospital told local NBC affiliate WVIT. Pediatric emergency services will continue to be available at St. Mary’s, which is part of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health.

“Connecticut Children’s will coordinate care with local clinicians to ensure seamless access to specialty and hospital-based services,” the organization said in a statement. “If a child requires a higher level of care, they will be transferred to our Hartford campus to receive that care without interruption.”

Local officials expressed concern that the move would limit access to comprehensive pediatric care in the Waterbury region, located about 30 miles south of Hartford.

“This move is concerning for our community and for the many families who rely on having high-quality pediatric care close to home,” Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski told WVIT. “Waterbury’s children and families deserve access to comprehensive healthcare services within our own community. Local access is critical, particularly when children require ongoing care.”

At least six general acute care hospitals have ended inpatient pediatric services so far this year, pointing to low volumes and financial strain, according to Becker’s reporting.
