CommonSpirit zeroes in on ambulatory growth

Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health added 90 ambulatory care sites over the past two fiscal years, including 34 across nine states in 2025.

“At this point we’re not focused on hospital acquisitions,” CommonSpirit CEO Wright Lassiter III said on an Oct. 1 investor call. “We’re primarily looking at ambulatory growth to meet the needs of our consumers and align with the future of healthcare delivery.”

CFO Daniel Morissette said the system is working on a strategic plan that includes a greater ambulatory footprint and more touchpoints outside of its acute care hospitals. But he said CommonSpirit is being disciplined in its approach.

“We’re all ears with partnerships, with acquisitions, with things that we can do strategically, but we’re also very fiscally disciplined about only paying what we believe we’re able to pay to make any acquisition or major expansion financially successful.”

COO Terika Richardson added that there are no pending deals to disclose, but “we are going to look at everything from within-market, to larger opportunities.”

CommonSpirit Health recorded a $225 million operating loss (-0.6% operating margin) in fiscal 2025, which ended June 30. That’s an improvement from an $875 million loss (-2.4% margin) posted in 2024.
