4 Version 5010 Risk Mitigation Strategies

CMS has encouraged healthcare providers to test both internally and externally with business partners prior to the HIPAA Version 5010 deadline of Jan. 1, 2012 to assure all partners are able to send and receive compliant transactions effectively.

For entities that have not yet begun external testing, CMS has recommended four risk mitigation strategies:

•    Communicate with vendors and trading partners regularly.
•    Reach out to a clearinghouse for assistance.
•    Establish a line of credit to help cover potential cash flow disruptions from delayed reimbursement claims.
•    Take advantage of available resources, including several online tools offered by CMS.
