CMS: Medicare RACs Identify $75M in Overpayments in FY 2010

In fiscal year 2010 ending Sept. 30, Medicare recovery audit contractors identified and corrected $75.4 million in overpayments, according to a CMS report (pdf).

Medicare RACs also restored $16.9 million in underpayments back to providers. According to the report, there were 191,878 total correction claims.

Other findings about the Medicare RAC program in FY 2010 include the following:

•    Inpatient claims were the most prevalent, as RACs corrected a combined $41.4 million in over- and underpayments.
•    Only 2.4 percent of all 2010 overpayment claims have been both challenged and overturned on appeal.
•    The top error codes that led to overpayments were incorrect codes, incorrect number of units and unbundling.
