Nurse members of MNA allege Steward and Cerberus have failed to maintain high quality patient care standards at its Massachusetts hospitals while proposing to close services or entire hospitals. According to the news release, the state approved for-profit Steward’s acquisition of then non-profit Caritas Christi Health Care’s hospitals as long as it did not consider such closures. The nurses have voiced other concerns, including reduced staffing levels, cut benefits and elimination of specialty units.
The nurses are also protesting Steward’s growing number of partnerships with or acquisitions of physician groups, which they say pose a risk to non-profit and community hospitals.
The protest outside Cerberus’ headquarters will take place later this afternoon.
