Patient A: Bitten by an orca at an oil rig. Patient B: Struck by a golf ball at a music hall. These aren’t Mad Libs; these are actual coding combinations for providers within ICD-10.

Thanks to a Wall Street Journal interactive feature, the intricacies and details of the roughly 140,000 ICD-10 diagnosis codes are outlined and able to be searched.

The new coding sets, which will be used by all healthcare providers by Oct. 1, 2013, describe specific injuries as well as locations of where a patient could have gotten hurt. The next time patients say they were pecked by a chicken at a chicken coop or they were struck by a field hockey puck near a courthouse, remember: There is probably a code for it.
