Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope plans to lay off 73 employees at its Irwindale, Calif., facility, according to a regulatory notice filed with the state Sept. 23.

The layoffs are set to take effect Nov. 24, with most of the affected employees working in business support and operations functions at all levels, including management, according to a statement from Nisha Morris, chief marketing and communications officer at City of Hope. The cuts do not directly affect patient care, she said.

“As City of Hope has grown into a national cancer system, we have continued to evaluate where we can operate more consistently across our organization to better support patients, their families and the employees who serve them,” Ms. Morris said. “As part of this analysis, we have made the difficult decision to reduce our staff as we standardize how certain areas of the organization are supported.”

City of Hope said it is providing transition pay and benefits, severance offers, outplacement and other support services to affected employees. Last year, the organization laid off 196 workers. In total, it employs more than 12,000 people across California, Arizona, Illinois and Georgia.
