Cincinnati hospital profits increased in 2014: 3 findings

The hospitals in the greater Cincinnati area had a combined net income of $645.1 million in 2014, up from $588.6 million in 2012, according to Cincinnati.com.

The findings are from a report titled "Ohio Health Market Review," created by independent marketing analyst Allan Baumgarten.

Here are three findings from Mr. Baumgarten's report.

1. The strongest margins were at The Christ Hospital, TriHealth and St. Elizabeth Healthcare. TriHealth had a net income of $145,217,102, while St. Elizabeth Healthcare brought in $102,858,920. The ChristHospital's net income was $88,324,673.

2. Medicaid expansion helped Medicaid enrollment increase. Ohio's decision to expand Medicaid brought in 600,000 enrollees, making the grand total of enrollees 2.4 million in 2014. The federal program covered 269,000 inpatient days at area hospitals.

3. The hospital occupancy rate slightly dropped. In 2008, the hospital occupancy rate was 68.7 percent, but in 2014, it was 67.4 percent. TriHealth's occupancy rate was the highest at 74.4 percent.
